Hi there! My name is Cosmin Cimpoeru. I’m a young man with quite some experience in the sales market for my age. It’s been a few years now since I’ve focused my activity in birotics and stationery. I’ve managed to establish some solid business relationships by now and I’ve got some good customers. Things are going pretty well, but they’re not fabulous. At least, not yet, or not until what I’m about to tell you next. I like to keep my body in shape and my mind fit and that’s why I work out in my free time, I play tennis, to be precise. It does a lot of good for one’s self-esteem and, as the Latins used to say, “mens sana in corpore sano”, right?
My entrepreneur’s dream is to attract bigger clients and really satisfactory figures on my checks. But how can I get there? Oh, yeah, we all know the theory: send out interesting offers, make the prices more customers-friendly and so on. But this isn’t really enough. I have to do something to open new doors for my business, I need a so-called “letter of guarantee” to make my entrance on the big market, I need to do some business networking!
It all started some time ago, during a week-end when I went out to play tennis, as I do every week-end. This time, though, I didn’t go to my usual tennis place, but I chose a different one. It was a double game and, after the match, one of the players, a former adversary, took me aside and told me that he liked how I played so he asked me if I was interested in becoming his game partener for the next period. He explained that there was going to be a tournament organized in that tenis base for the next few days. It didn’t take him much to make me accept and, afterwards, we went out to get a beer, a guys’ thing. Playing tenis without having a beer afterwards is not really tennis. So, as we drank our beers, I found out that my new partener was a manager in a multinational company. When I heared that, I instantly realized this was my opportunity to make my business grow at last, the only thing was that I had to be very careful about it and go step by step. All my questions regarding ways to grow my business, how to get more doors open for me or how to target more important customers were finally getting an answer.
So, step one: I had to develop a better relationship on the tennis field with my new partner, so I said we should get together for a couple of times before the tournament and he agreed.
The days passed by, we got to know each other a lot better and I told him what I did for a living. I didn’t insist on the matter, since the art of communication tells us to develop a friendship first and the business relationship will come as a consequence. Knowing that this was actually a once in a lifetime opportunity for me, I started acting as the old saying goes, “when in Rome, do as the Romans do”. That is, in my situation, I showed a lot of confidence, I made sure I knew my business one end to the other, I double checked my communication skills so to make sure what I had to say would be transmitted and perceived correctly and that I could reassure people I understood their point of view.
Another thing I was very carefull to respect was that one can’t receive anything unless he is willing to give something in the first place. So, I started tipping my partner about the tennis match and how to improve his skills on the field. It is very important to understand that you first have to give something in order to receive anything. It’s just as the Karmic laws tell us: everything that happens to us is the result of our past actions. My partner’s improvement in tennis was easily aknowledged by his friends, who started teasing him about his new tennis partner – me. I couldn’t help thinking that they should wait and see what a business partner I was going to make of him!
Visible delighted with the way things were going with our tennis partnership, he finally asked me more details about my business. It was just what I wanted! I knew I had to be very confident, to speak clearly and to best “sell” my business. It didn’t take him long to ask me to make a specific offer for his company, “maybe we could develop a business partnership as well”… Oh, brother, was he kidding?! That’s what I was hoping for from the very beginnig.
Useless to say, I couldn’t be more happier about his suggestion so I did my best to make things go in the right direction for both of us. And, trust me, I did! He was my most important customer, so I payed extra-attention to all the deliveries we got for him, since he could be, as well, the recomandation I needed to get doors open for me and my business. His word of recomandation to another customer was as good as a signed contract, since he was very respected and admired by all his partners.
It didn’t take long befor he recomended me to all his friends and I got to sign contracts with all of them, without exception.
As for tennis, I still get calls from all his friends, asking me to be their partner on the field as well as in business. It’s almost like I’m working in a call-center :).
So, do you guys have a hobby like I have one, playing tennis? Do not abbandon it, because opportunities of business networking may show up everywhere, when you least expect it. For me, it was on the tennis field. Who knows what could it be for you? It’s just like love, when a lot of people are convinced they’ll find their significant other in a club, but the truth is that chances are at least equal to finding love in a library. One never truly knows, does he?
Oh, and another thing! Don’ t hesitate to write to me a line or two! Stories, questions, ideas…I wellcome them all!
